Getting A GST Number
As a homeworker, you may be wondering? Do I register a business name?
Do I need a GST number? What can I write off? Is it worth it?
The answer really depends on your type of home-based occupation and
your financial status. According to my tax accountant, you do not need
to register a business name to run a business and to write off items
related to your business. It's just a bit harder for you if the tax
people come knocking on your door for an audit.
Many people run businesses for many different reasons. You may want
to receive cash "under the table" so you don't have to go through the
hassle of claiming a mountain of receipts. It's also great for cash
flow. You may be starting a business because there is too much
competition to get hired in the field of your choice or, the opposite,
you don't want to work for anyone else but yourself. The last scenario
may be out of desperation! You need money and you can't get a job
anywhere! Whatever the reason, there are options.
Register a business only if you think you will need to write off
certain items that pertain to your business. It just makes sense.
You will save money and you will hopefully fare better during tax time.
Next, you can register for a GST number if you need to buy things for
your business that will cost a lot, ie; leasing a car, purchasing a
computer, software, internet services, etcetera. You can also get a
personal GST number, if you don't want to register a business name.
If you are a freelance journalist, for example, you would call the
government offices and ask for a personal GST number. It's so simple,
it takes about 1 minute over the phone to do this. You can charge GST
for you services and you can get the GST back on the high priced items
you have purchased. For details, phone:
